ABC (Art, Blockchain & Crypto): A Guide to ArtPro for the Complete Crypto Novice
What is ArtPro? That’s a question which can be answered: ArtPro is a peer-to-peer marketplace and art provenance monitor built on immutable blockchain technology.
That’s a fair description for anyone already involved in crypto – cryptocurrency – but for everyone else those exact same words look like a badly translated japanese-to-english instruction manual. Provenance? Immutable blockchain? Ugh.
Mission failure. Description abort.
The problem with 99% of explanations in the world of cryptocurrency, sometimes known as the cryptosphere, is that those who write them tend to assume that you know everything already, when actually, that may not be the case. So when answering, “what is ArtPro?” let’s assume nothing, and take it from the start.
This is ArtPro explained for the total crypto novice; so set your brain to easy mode. Let’s do this.

What is crypto?
Crypto is an often-used abbreviation for cryptocurrency, a digital currency which operates without the need of a central authority or bank. Bitcoin, which was the first and is still the most popular cryptocurrency today, elegantly described itself as, “A peer-to-peer electronic cash system”. That is cryptocurrency in a nutshell. It’s electronic, it’s currency, and it operates directly from person to person, peer-to-peer, without the need for a bank. The ‘crypto’ part comes from the math and cryptography that is necessary to protect the system from bad actors.
Warning: Crypto is also used as an abbreviation for its parent word, cryptography. So although crypto will mostly mean cryptocurrency it may instead be short for cryptography in some instances. How can you tell the difference? Well it’s a bit like dating someone who has an identical twin, until you’ve learned out how to tell them apart yourself, simply proceed with extreme caution.
What is blockchain?
Blockchain is how cryptocurrencies keep a record of transactions. It’s a log of who owns what. Blockchain is an immutable (meaning unalterable) ledger, not controlled by any one person or entity but instead by a network of computers. Additions to the ledger are made in

blocks, with each block added sequentially to the previously approved block. In Bitcoin blocks are approved by miners who gain a financial reward for approval. Over time one block joins on to the next, and on to the next, like links in a chain. Hence, blockchain. Importantly, once a block is added, it cannot be altered or changed.

What links blockchain to art?
In the art world provenance is a record of where any given piece of art was at any given time, tracing it from its earliest known origins, right up to the present day. This chain-of-title is one of the most important ways to establish whether a work of art is the real deal or fake. If that chain has been tampered with or is uncertain then the authenticity of a piece remains in doubt. It’s a massive problem because it is estimated that 1 in 3 pieces of artwork sold is a forgery. Clearly, the art world greatly benefit from a proven technology that firmly establishes an unbreakable and unaltered chain of record, an immutable blockchain.

Why an Initial Exchange Offering (IEO)?
An IEO is a means of crowdfunding and it is the specific method ArtPro has selected to fund itself. IEOs are similar to the more commonly publicised Initial Coin Offering (ICO) with a few important, key differences. In any case, both IEOs or ICOs offer the same basic proposition: an exchange of tokens. For instance, in exchange for some Bitcoin or Ethereum, ArtPro would give you ArtPro Tokens (APT) in exchange.
The way in which IEOs differ to ICOs is that an intermediary, an exchange, is the one to facilitate the transfer between the two parties. This is an important distinction, because exchanges clear the projects as ‘worthy’ of listing in advance, a hurdle some ICOs fail to ever clear. The exchange also conducts due diligence on the projects lending greater credibility to the project and its raise. In short, the IEO offers greater protection for investors than your garden variety ICO.

So why APT?
Returning to the very beginning, let’s remind ourselves exactly what ArtPro is. ArtPro is a peer-to-peer marketplace and art provenance monitor built on immutable blockchain technology.
Hope you got that this time around. It’s a place to buy and sell works of art where you know the art is genuine. It’s a place where buyers and sellers can connect without giving a huge slice of the sales price to auctioneers.
The APT token is ArtPro’s utility token, used on the ArtPro platform for a number of utilities or purposes. The basic value proposition is that as the platform increases in popularity, so demand for the token will naturally increase. With increased demand comes increased value, and so the price of each token rises.

Therefore, the swapping of one cryptocurrency in favor of APT is a value judgement on ArtPro itself. Is ArtPro a good idea that solves a genuine business problem in a new and interesting way? Yes! Does it use blockchain to good effect? We’d say so! And now you know a little more about crypto, you’re in a much better position to register your interest in buying APT as ArtPro enter Round 2 of their IEO on 23rd August 2019.
